Titleholders must submit reports, data and samples to ensure they comply with the regulations.

We publish information and templates to assist you to meet your obligations when submitting notifications, reports, data and samples. You should read about the reporting requirements before referring to fact sheets and templates.

Classifying information about wells and surveys

Your reports, data and samples given to the Titles Administrator are protected under the OPGGS Act and the regulations, unless they fall within the categories of information that may be made public.

How information is classified determines when, and if, it will be made public.

Request a variation to well, survey or sample requirements

There may be times when you cannot meet the specified requirements for giving reports, data or samples. In certain cases, the Titles Administrator may agree to vary those requirements.

Survey reports and data

Titleholders must submit reports and data if they:

  • conduct a geological or geophysical survey in an offshore area
  • have licensed survey data in compliance with a title condition
  • have reprocessed survey data in compliance with a title condition.

The RMA regulations outline what reports and data must be given, and by when. Generally, you must provide:

  • Survey commencement notifications
  • Weekly survey reports
  • Survey acquisition report and survey acquisition data
  • Survey processing report and processed survey data
  • Survey interpretation report and interpretative survey data
  • Survey reprocessing report and survey reprocessed data
  • Survey reprocessing interpretation report and interpretative reprocessed survey data.

Titleholders must give certain reports, data and samples in relation to offshore drilling or other operations.

Daily well reporting

If you are conducting drilling or workover operations in a title area, you must submit daily reports.

The reports are:

  • daily drilling reports
  • daily geological reports
  • workover reports.

Well completion reports

If you are conducting drilling operations in a title area, you must submit certain reports and data after the end of the operation. You need to do this within the specified timeframes.

You must provide:

  • an initial well completion report and initial well completion data
  • a final well completion report and final well completion data.

Physical samples

If you drill a well or conduct another operation and collect a sample, for each sample type you must:

  • provide the specified sample quantity
  • submit within the specified timeframe
  • send the sample to the specified address.

Sending samples overseas

If you have collected a core, cutting or sample from an operation in an Australian offshore area, you are required to securely retain the sample in Australia. However, you may take or send a sample outside Australia for analysis if you notify the Titles Administrator.

Requirements for sending samples overseas include:

  • notifying the Titles Administrator and providing the required information
  • returning samples to Australia
  • providing reports about analyses
  • submitting certain (secondary) samples produced (e.g., slides and residues).

Titleholders must submit an annual title assessment report (ATAR) for activity related to the below.

Petroleum:

  • exploration permits
  • retention leases
  • production licences.

Greenhouse gas:

  • assessment permits
  • holding leases.

Petroleum production licensees must submit a monthly production report (MPR) for each calendar month.

GHG injection licensees must submit:

  • a monthly GHG injection report for each calendar month
  • a monthly GHG accounting report for each calendar month
  • an annual GHG injection report for each financial year
  • an annual GHG accounting report for each financial year.

If a petroleum or GHG titleholder makes a petroleum discovery the titleholder is required to make 2 separate submissions:

  • Notification of discovery of petroleum
  • Petroleum discovery assessment report.
