Remake of the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage (Resource Management and Administration) Regulations

3 December 2025

The Government has remade the resource management and administration regulations under the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 this week. The previous regulations were made in 2011 and were due to sunset on 1 April 2026. The remake will ensure the regulations remain fit for purpose and responsive to changes in the industry and operating environment.

The new Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage (Resource Management and Administration) Regulations 2025 will commence on 31 March 2026. The delayed commencement provides time for industry and regulators alike to prepare. The National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator is developing updated guidance material to reflect the changes. The updated guidance will be made available for public consultation soon.

The government has also amended the data release provisions for disclosing survey information in the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage (Resource Management and Administration) Regulations 2011. These amendments commenced upon registration on 28 November 2025. See our Public Release of Data page for more information on accessing data.
